Natural gas, the key to our energy independence, and low electricity prices…
Electricity prices fluctuate with the price of natural gas. This is because most power plants serving our peak load requirements are fueled by natural gas. Natural gas- fired facilities have served this role mostly because of their ability to come on and offline quickly, which enables the Independent System Operators (ISOs) to maintain the power grid more efficiently.
In addition to the flexibility natural gas offers, its popularity as a fuel source is growing for a variety of other reasons. New advancements in our ability to extract the gas from shale have created the opportunity for real energy independence in the United States. Rock fracturing (often referred to as fracking) has led to explosive growth in supply. The abundance of stored natural gas resulted in the market hitting a 10 year price low in April of 2012. Consequently, electricity rates have dropped considerably in the past number of years. Natural gas is also appealing as an energy source because it is a much cleaner burning fossil fuel than coal, producing approximately half as much carbon dioxide.
The future of natural gas as a growing fuel source for power generation is all but certain. OES has expert understanding of not only the daily price swings in this still- volatile energy market, but the politics surrounding natural gas and the long-term impact they may have on energy prices. This allows us to better protect our most important asset, our clients!
